Managing the Education and Communications program for NASA’s historic New Horizons mission to Pluto has been the highlight of my career. And New Horizons’ flight past Pluto in July was like no event I’ve ever participated in and I had the privilege to manage the efforts. We introduced Pluto to the world – from the hundreds of events we held around the country, to the millions of STEM students and public we inspired, to the billions of people who responded to our unprecedented education and communicaitons campaign on Live NASA TV, social media and through the press.
I have extensive experience in bringing excitement to the public and inspiring the next generation of explorers and discoverers. New Horizons was the highlight of my nearly 20 years leading the Education and Communications office at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Space Department.
With missions from the Sun to Pluto, APL is engineering the future of space exploration – and the APL team provides unique opportunities for K-12 students, educators, undergraduate and graduate students, museums, science centers, the general public and the media to share in the excitement. I have extensive experience crafting messages and developing products from documentary films and fact sheets to crisis communications plans and websites.
