Informal Heliophysics Educator Ambassador (IHEA) Workshop (post-workshop report)
This workshop was held Feb 8-13, 2015 in Chicago, IL, and brought nineteen informal educators* from around the country to practice using NASA educational resources. Additionally, each participant commits – upon their return home – to leading two workshops for classroom teachers, mentoring another informal educator, and using the materials they were trained on directly with an informal audience. Participants, known as Educator Ambassadors, will interact with mission subject matter experts, and will continue to engage with each other through follow up webinars and online collaboration.
Mission collaborators include the ICON, IBEX, THEMIS, MMS, SDO, and Van Allen Probes missions, and cross-division collaborators, as well from Astrophysics.
Early program evaluation results demonstrate that participants showed significant gains in their level of understanding of space science, knowledge of NASA missions, ability to teach with GEMS Space Science, preparedness to teach heliophysics, strategies for teaching heliophysics concepts, confidence using the curriculum, ways to integrate current mission data into their work, and knowledge and awareness of NASA heliophysics missions.
* "Informal educators” are professionals and volunteers who work in informal education settings— places such as science centers, planetariums, museums, afterschool programs, parks, libraries and community organizations.
