Each spring the Baysox organization in Bowie, Maryland offers tickets to the local Bowie students to attend a baseball game. Prior to the baseball game the students are encouraged to attend a STEM Expo, two hours prior to the game. The Baysox organization contacts environmental organizations, in advance, to participate by demonstrating to the students STEM projects or providing the students with a “hands on” activity related to STEM. Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC) in Grasonville, MD participated by promoting the AREN Project and having the students make mini-kites.
During the month of May CBEC’s staff, Judy Wink, Alissa Quinton and Deane Horowitz worked with 3,583 students over three events. Students were accompanied by teachers, and the staff spoke with the teachers about the AREN Project and hard copy information was given to teachers. Student attendance was based on the number of mini kits prepared and distributed. Students enjoyed the activity and were seen flying their kites throughout the concourse of the stadium.
