CCRI Educator, Elizabeth Sebastian, will lead a conversation about urban heat islands and the comprehensive unit plan she developed. The unit plan “The Heat is On: Urban Heat Islands, detection strategies, and mitigation solutions” uses innovative technology to understand the changing climate in urban areas and create solutions to the ongoing environmental problems in cities. The unit utilizes a variety of resources, such as NASA EOSDIS Worldview, Terra MODIS data, GLOBE, NASA Scientific Visualization Studio videos, NASA Climate Kids games, and more.

Participate in the 2019 GLOBE AREN Project Wind Speed Engineering Challenge from April 1 – May 31, 2019.
Challenge: Engineer a low-cost electronic or non-electronic anemometer (tool for measuring the speed of wind).
The GLOBE Program does not have a protocol for determining wind speed. The GLOBE Program supports the AEROKATS and ROVER Education Network (AREN) Project, which utilizes kites to collect data. Current and former students, of Marina Pavlic, from the Prirodoslovna i grafička škola in Croatia will be discussing their investigation of Park Mlaka in Mlaka County, Croatia. Students developed an overarching hypothesis of, "The trees in Park Mlaka produce enough oxygen for the inhabitants of the entire Mlaka County." The initial research took place from 2016-2017 with students that are now at university. On August 2, 2017, STEM Education Specialists for NASA eClips™ presented nine workshop sessions to 150 high school students attending the Hispanic College Institute sponsored by the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network (VALHEN). The HCI, held at Virginia Tech, helps prepare underrepresented students for a college experience and exposes them to possible STEM careers. The STEM focused workshops featured NASA eClips™ resources, including the recently approved solar eclipse lesson, Solar Images, and existing NASA eClips™ resources about health and nutrition. The students also served as a focus group for new Spotlite video production to identify the needs of Spanish-speaking student

July 26, 2017, STEM Education Specialist Joan Harper-Neely from the NASA eClips™ team led fourteen Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers attending the Virginia Technology and Engineering Education Association (VTEEA) summer conference in using the engineering design process to produce NASA Spotlite videos. Teacher production teams spent several hours learning to implement the design challenge, designed with NASA content, into the CTE curriculum.

The Arizona State University Infiniscope Team participated in the NASA booth at the American Library Association National Conference in Chicago in June 2017. Our team showcased our newest digital learning experiences for the librarians offering them free, engaging activities that use NASA data for their audiences. Librarians were also invited to join our Infiniscope Teaching Network to be able to customize these experiences for their local areas.

NESSP staff held faciliated several outreach efforts including a rocketry showcase in the South End of Seattle, aerospace engineering concepts for exploration of Mars, and worked with two tribal school to advance STEM education. An interview with Tribal Radio Station KWSO was given to get word out about NASA efforts. Camps for middle school students in all three states are set for offering this summer and camps for high school students are under development. Teacher professional development workshops are also planned to occur inthe three states in the next couple of months.
