A newly expanded and updated guide to resources for teaching about the challenges that face women in astronomy, and the achievements that women have made despite those challenges, is now available at: http://bit.ly/womenastronomers  

The materials have been selected so they can be assigned to students at the Astro 101 level. The guide was compiled by Andrew Fraknoi, Emeritus Chair of Astronomy at Foothill College and the former executive director of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

NASA Spotlite Challenge: Cloud Detectives
Developed in Collaboration with NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative

NASA eClips and NESEC invite student teams to produce a short video (90 seconds to 2 minutes) confronting one of two misconceptions related to clouds by investigating and collecting evidence, including GLOBE Clouds and NASA data.

In this challenge, student teams:

  • Confront a science misconception by gathering evidence through observations and explorations
  • Capture questions and findings through video
  • Produce a video to challenge others to make their own observations

On September 19 and 22, 2020, Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) hosted a virtual Girl Scout Badging Event with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) leading interactive activities. 

The 2-Session (4-hour) interactive event reached ~45 Girl Scout Cadettes from the San Jacinto Girl Scout Council, in the Houston, TX area. Cadettes completed activities to earn the Space Science Researcher Badge. Science Activation content, connections to Science Mission Directorate (SMD) science, and Citizen Science opportunities were shared during the event.

The Space Exploration Educators Conference (SEEC) provides hands-on activity sessions and opportunities to connect with NASA content and experts, took place at Space Center Houston from February 6-9, 2020.  

The Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science (ARES) Science Engagement Team reached 200+ educators: 

  • Conducting a Lunar and Meteorite Sample Disk Certification workshop as a pre-conference opportunity.
  • Participating in the SEEC Expo, in collaboration with other Science Activation Teams.
  • Facilitated two hands-on activity sessions highlighting Earth and planetary exploration & sharing Subject Matter Expert, Dr. Paul Abel, as well as interact with Astromaterials samples.

Two years of the Trees Around the GLOBE Student Research Campaign have passed. Over this time, there have been students and educators from over fifty countries participating in data collection for tree height, land cover, greenings, carbon cycle, among others. During the two years, there have been tens of thousands of data, submitted to the GLOBE database, that align to the campaign. Aligning to the campaign means that the students have collected data, analyzed their data, and developed student research projects, some for local science fairs, GLOBE US SRS, and the GLOBE IVSS. Brian Campbell and Dorian Janney took part in the 2020 COSI Virtual Science festival, May 6 – 9, 2020, through Facebook Live and Video Premiere events. The festival was, “A Community Celebration of Science,” a four-day community festival that engaged learners of all ages – bringing science to people where they live, work, and lounge – to inspire curiosity and further exploration.
