Bringing GLOBE into 21st Century Community Learning Centers

Twenty-two afterschool facilitators from across the United States participated in a GLOBE Workshop at NASA Langley. The afterschool facilitators all serve students as part of the US Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21CCLC) program. All the students that participate are from underserved communities and qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
This GLOBE training workshop is one component of the GLOBE 21CCLC Atmosphere Investigation. The workshop participants were trained in the Cloud and Surface Temperature protocols. The afterschool facilitators actively participated in a series of inquiry-based learning activities designed to provide students with experience following the steps of the GLOBE Scientific Research Process. Their students will conduct an eight-week investigation on the relationship between clouds and surface temperature while learning about how clouds affect Earth’s energy budget. During the workshop, facilitators heard from NASA atmospheric scientists who are studying clouds. Follow-up Webinars will be conducted to ensure that each participant is successful in the implementation of the GLOBE Atmosphere Investigation in their 21CCLC afterschool programs. Student participants will also get to meet with NASA scientists or engineers virtually.
This program is part of an InterAgency agreement with NASA and the US Department of Education, led by Glenn Research Center.
