SMD has Two Positions for E/PO Leaders at NASA Headquarters

The NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) is seeking to fill two positions on its Education and Public Outreach (E/PO) management team. SMD is responsible for expanding scientific understanding of the Earth and the universe in which we live.

One position is a permanent civil servant position. It is for the SMD Lead for Education and Public Outreach. The SMD E/PO Lead is responsible for developing, approving, evaluating, and coordinating the Directorate's policies and programs aimed at enhancing the Nation's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and at communicating NASA's science results, findings, and applications to external users and the general public. The second position is for a visiting E/PO professional at NASA Headquarters and will be filled by an assignee under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) or by a detailee from a NASA Center or other Government agency. Visiting professional positions are normally filled for two years, extendible to six years, by individuals on leave from their home institution. Applications are welcome from all qualified professionals including those at universities, NASA Centers, and other U.S. public and private institutions.

SMD is seeking an experienced E/PO professional to work with the SMD E/PO Lead in managing NASA's SMD-wide education and public outreach programs. The visiting professional will participate in the planning, development and management of SMD's E/PO program including the E/PO grants program, mission E/PO programs, SMD's E/PO Forums, and other SMD E/PO activities. The visiting professional will also represent SMD and NASA to the SMD community, other NASA offices including NASA's Office of Education, and other partner Agencies and institutions. The visiting professional will play a leadership role in developing budgets, program plans, and long range strategic plans to define the future SMD E/PO program. He/she can make a difference in the execution of the overall SMD education and outreach mission and are expected to demonstrate a high degree of initiative in doing so.

Applicants must have a college degree or equivalent in a relevant field (e.g., science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, etc.) plus relevant experience in education and outreach. Familiarity with NASA's programs and possessing an ability to communicate effectively with the community, educators, and media, is strongly desired. Positions are available immediately though the starting date is negotiable.
